Broken Heart

Madelyn had some breathing and oxygenation problems after being born and the drs were puzzled at what was wrong. She was whisked away and I didn't get to hold her or even touch her that day. It was sad and confusing. The next day, after some testing a specialist diagnosed the problem, a heart defect, Tetralogy of Fallot. Simply put, a hole in her heart and a narrow artery to the lungs that wasn't allowing blood to get oxygenated properly. She was taken to another hospital and I had to wait to recover from the c section for a couple of days to be released to go see her. She spent 6 days in the NICU getting lots of tests. Her wonderful cardiologist broke the hard news to us that she would need open heart surgery to correct the problem but later, when she got bigger. She was stable enough to go home to grow. That was good news!
